I would really like to paint the walls, but they look so slick. Someone told me if I put a layer of Killz paint on it first it will work fine but I'm not so sure. Anyone with similar problems and any helpful suggestions???

Hi....I Just painted the panelling in my kitchen. I gave it a good washing first...if you want to be ambitious...you can fill the groves in with filler (gyproc filler)..then put a good coat of primer on. I had to use oil base primer because of the finish on the panelling, but you can put latex paint over this. After I painted the walls, no one could tell it was panelling. In my games room I just painted over the panelling, and didn't bother to fill the groves. You can pretty much do anything, as long as you prime and clean the surface first.

It is not really all that hard to take the panneling down and prep the wall for paint. It is a tad more work but will look much better than a tack paint over job.

we bought an old house that had that paneling in a small dark living room. we used killz and then painted the paneling white. it made a huge difference! first we scratched the shiny surface of the paneling with steel wool, and washed it to get off any old oil or wax

NO.Unless your sure it's paneling I have the same thing in my house,an It's what they call tongue,& groove...it's solid pine, they don"t make it anymore{if they do it would be very expensive)I also used it as a den, when my kids were younger,Know it's my dining room,I have a pine dining table & Hutch,The room is awesome, again my wood paneling has a shine ( use liquid gold} to clean it an maintain it's luster. I would never get rid of it it adds character, but the decision is yours to make, just find out if it is real wood before you ruin it.

My cousin did this for my aunt's house. Clean well with TSP, scrub with a green scrubbie or light steel wool, rinse well, let dry. Primer, and paint.

Her house was totally transformed and looked like a cottage instead of a 70's rec room!
