In addition to "real" answers, it has taught MANY art students how to render 3-D objects in 2-D. How many times have you seen someone drawing or painting a still life with a Polaroid of the subject clipped to their easel?

Intially when the first photographic process was introduced in 1839 it was shunned as a craft and not an art. However, artists of the time were not ones to shy away from using photography as a source for their paintings. Early photographers such as Atget made his living selling his photos to painters.
However, if you want to talk about how photography changed the art world, perhaps you should consider the work of Gustave Courbet, and in particular his painting "Burial at Ornans". This painting is pivotal in art history because it has been said that it was this painting that reveals a shift from traditional academic art to modern art. Why is this? Well for one thing this painting is more like a photo, in fact it is believed that Courbet used a photo as a source for this painting. If you notice there is a dog in the funeral, as well as people are deliberately chopped off in the painting as if framed by a camera. All of these things were tabboo and scorned by the major art academies. The following is an analysis of the painting Burial at Ornans

"The camera would have a profound effect on painting compositions and subject matter as seen in Gustav Courbet's, "Burial at Ornans". In this painting there is no focal point. No one person is more important than any other and it almost looks like a conveyor belt of people going by with some figures being cropped in the way a camera would capture a slice of life. It is the democratization of the picture plane."

Although the shift from classical art to modern art is a disputed subject, nonetheless if one were to concur that it was Courbet that was the first artist of the modern period in art, then we can thank the camera for giving the world modern art.

Photography has changed every science as we know it including Art.
We no longer have to travel all over the world to see different works of art to compare them to each other.
Photography allows us to see behind pictures to an original canvas- through X-Ray.
Photography is an art on it's own. That has changed the world of art.
