Well.....I am one of "those moms" who nurse an older child. My kids have all been allowed to self wean. It's natural and healthy for them. They benefit from it as long as they are allowed to continue to nurse. It's not like it turns to Kool Aid at 12 months or something.
My oldest nursed until he was 3 yrs and 5 months old.
My middle nursed until she was about 22 months old.
My youngest is still nursing at 3 years and 9 months old.
My first two tandem nursed for 16 months. My middle nursed through my pregnancy with my youngest, but weaned right before she was born. Tandem nursing makes for a very special bond between siblings and lessens sibling rivalry. It makes the transition to big brother/sister much easier for the older child. I was sad that my girls didn't get to tandem.
The first year of breastfeeding is so important and I applaud any mom who was able to make it that long! It's not easy in our society, unfortunately. Very sad since 12 mos is the minimum that the AAP recommends. There are also so many benefits to continuing to nurse beyond the first year.
* The AAP recommends 12 mos as the *minimium* time a child should nurse.
* The WHO and UNICEF recommend *at least* 2 years.
* Did you know MICHAEL JORDAN was nursed until he was 3 years old?! He turned out pretty darn well, I think!
* The world-wide average age of weaning is 4.2 years.
* The natural age of human weaning is between 2.5 and 7 years, according to research by anthropologist Kathryn Dettwyler.

How long did you breast feed?:20 months and still going, though I am 30+ wks prego with #2 (planning on tandem) How long did you intend to breast feed (before you had kids)?:never had a deadline, always was planning to do it as long as I could and baby wanted it. Was it hard?:At first it was real hard, as a matter of fact, took me 10 months to finally get it right and be able to stop pumping! Did you wean your kid(s) or did they wean themselves? :Not planning to wean, baby will stop when baby decides she doesn't want it anymore. Why did you Breast feed?: it's always been the only choice for me, every since I can remember. it's a most normal natural thing to do. Also did any moms start out breast feeding and have to switch to formula? according to docs, I should have, but I didn't give up. kept taking supplements myself to increase my supply. Never supplemented with formula, and after 10 hard months, if finally worked (trouble started in the first place by listening to someone telling me to pump and give the bottle instead of just letting baby nurse - yes, this creates supply issues, and flow preference issues) Did you Pump? If so what pump did you use?: yes, Medela free style, but if you can NOT PUMP, don't. It's better for you, your supply and the baby! How long do you think it is socially acceptable to breast feed a baby? who cares? really. It's what nature intended. and remember socially means this society, not the majority of the population of the world!

Both of my kids self-weaned at 8 1/2 months. I would have stopped them by one anyway. A 4 year old breastfeeding is gross unless they are in a third world country and there is little source for food. I think it is very uncommon for people to nurse a baby and a CHILD at the same time. Not only uncommon but gross.

ok...personally if a child has teeth, or the ability to ask for breast milk--- with real words, i think it's been long enough.
I stopped with my oldest one, because the summer was over and I had to go back to work. ( he was 3 months old) With my last one, I stopped around 7 weeks because I was not producing enough milk to keep him happy.
It's an individual's choice. I think i would have been really uncomfortable seeing a four year old ask for milk and then nursing. (EWW!)

Till she got teeth...actually she was about 3 months old and I didn't want to share my boobs anymore. Plus its too hard once you start working 40 hours a week and are a single parent. Personally I think anything over a year is weird to me.

I didn't. But my cousin breastfed her oldest child till he was 5, every mother is different and it is her choice as to whether she will breastfeed and for how long as well as where.

Rule of thumb, if he/she can use a sippy cup .... it's time to let them drink on their own.
