Im talking about people who take all of it literally. Any defensive answers mean that you probably didn't read the previous line.

I think it all stems to the origins of religion and the mentality of primitive people. Before the advancement of science it was easier to believe in a Sun God and now people face Centuries of refinement of old superstitions they are taught from birth. Plus, people are by their very nature gullible.
Also, it takes more effort to against tradition - i takes a person willing to question things that make no logical sense. It's much easier to just toe-the-line and believe.

I suspect that it is a combination of factors. There is a certain part of the brain with becomes active in "believers" - It seems to be able to stimulate the production of certain hormones that are related to feelings of acceptance and approval. It may be that people are hard-wired to play the "us vs. them" game in this way, if they have a certain set of genetic or biological feedbacks that respond to this set of memes... It may be that there is a way to 'cure' them of these delusions, or even prevent the condition but at the current time it may be impossible in our society. It has been said that "in the country of the blind, the man with one eye is king..." but I suspect that it is much more likely that the man with one eye would be viewed as being utterly mad.

As children many believe in Santa Clause, when they "mature" they find out that Santa isn't real and they need a psychological replacement to help thier oral bio-survival circuit cope within society, some choose personal responsibility, while others choose the "christian" god. Plus they just aren't very bright to begin with. Then you have the people who don't believe it at all, they just want you to think thier good people.

Religion is man made. It has nothing to do with one's salvation. Faith in Christ and what He did for us at the Cross is all that matters.

Desperation.

People under stress will grasp at any form of comfort, and with the ever expanding access to information that our society has enjoyed, there are a lot of stressed out people in the world (having born witness every night to images and fears that, in the past, they would not have been brought to them in quite so personal a manner).

Blame it on the culture of fear, which has been so lucrative and politically useful lately.

(Now lets see how long it takes for me to rack up the obligatory four thumbs down and abuse report)

It seems to depend on where you live. In the UK very few people have conservative Christian views whereas in the US Christians are like a self perpetuating plague of locusts feeding off their own lies, hypocrisy and deceit.

I think people who lack something mentally are driven to throw themselves into extreme amounts of blind faith. Not sure why, perhaps it is insecurity or even some kind of mental defect.

People are naturally gullible and also have a need to believe, something, anything!
I guess I am just lucky that this gene was not expressed in me... ;-)
