I have a 1 year old cairn terrier, who is only 11 lbs. When she sees a big dog, e.g., bulldog, collie, mutt, whatever she growl and barks and trys to bite at it. But what is really strange is that when she sees a SMALLER dog she will cry, whimper, and hide behind me. WHy does she do this??

She's dog aggressive with bigger dogs and submissive to smaller dogs.
She may feel the other dogs are invading her territory, or in the case of bigger dogs, she may feel she's protecting you.
Unless you keep her on a tight leash and never out of your sight around other dogs, I suggest training.

They fear for size. The small Cairn thinks she is over powering the big dogs, because she has no sense of size. But when she sees a smaller dog, she knows it is the same size, she fears it will over power her. This happens all the time with the Cairns, Yorkies and Jack Russells in our kennel.

My Chihuahua Does the same thing. I think it is because little dogs have BIG attitudes that other dogs can sense. Smaller Dogs like Chihuahua's are very outgoing and think that they are a big as a Great Dane and as Strong as a BullMastiff. Or Your Dog might feel more at ease with bigger more relaxed dogs than anxious small dogs (not all small dogs are anxious). Or your dog could just be weird lol.
Hope I Helped!

i had a fox terrier that would fight dogs twice her size and win. she was very gentle and playful with smaller dogs and puppies. i think its what the dog whisperer calls primal behaviors -- things left over from pack mentalities.
i had a friend with 2 teacup chihuahuas -- they look like small rats, large mice. they would follow you around and bark at you the whole time you were visiting like they wanted to be the boss. that is a lot weirder.

In my residing house, my older canines, Tanner, is my 'hall exhibit screen'. Any time my different canines are doing something they should no longer, he has a particular 'hoot' sounding bark that asserts, "Maaaaa, they're being undesirable!!." it relatively is the only time he makes use of that bark. additionally, in the event that they're enjoying too complicated, he will come working up and get between them and basically stand there like he's breaking issues up. while they settle down, he is going back and lies down. Then, of direction, they start to try against back. He additionally opens my back gate to the exterior along with his nostril.

Maybe she expects the smaller dogs to nip and bark at her, the way SHE nips and bites at bigger dogs. Funny, huh? :^)
