Below are links to dog breed selectors. You answer some questions about your lifestyle, what size dog you want, and if you want it to shed and it tells you what breed of dog will do the best with you. Try them all because they may give slightly different breeds and ask slightly different questions.

Dogs cannot run till 2 years old so you may want to adopt one that is already matured.

If you're looking for a dog to run with you every morning, a larger boned breed probably isn't the best idea. Rotts, mastiffs, bulldogs, etc., can do a lot of damage to their joints if they run too much because of their size. You'll want something a bit lankier like a boxer, doberman, etc. Actually, the person who posted about greyhounds is absolutely right....they are complete couch potatos when not being exercised, lol. But I see someone else's excellent point about them not being distance runners. So take that into account. And check out the dogbreedinfo.com site that someone already posted.

Border collies are awesome dogs, but they are very intelligent and very energetic. They must be challenged daily with tasks and work in order to keep from becoming neurotic and destructive. They are definitely not a breed for everyone.

Try a couple of rescue groups in your area---I'm willing to bet they have some young adult dogs given up because they need to run.

Rescue groups usually foster their dogs so it is easier to match dogs and future owners. With an adult dog you'll known what you are getting for size, energy level, housebreaking, etc. A good rescue group can do more than help you find an appropriate breed---it will help you find the best DOG.

Plus, getting a pup would mean that you would need to wait a long time before the dog could really go running with you. Too much wear and tear on a pup's joints (and I mean dog under 1 for some breeds, maybe 18 months for others) and you could hurt it for life.

PS Adopting a greyhound is a greyt thing---but they are NOT distance runners. They are sprinters. A grey might make a good jogging partner, but you would need to work up to it just like any breed as they are not used to distances OR pavement. I would try looking at another breed. (I used to volunteer for a greyhound rescue group.)

I personaly would say Border Collie. They're great dogs i've got three of them. They're not to big about 19-24 inches at the shoulder. they havce tons of energy but sice you said that you are an athlete that should'nt be a problem. but there are some things that you need to watch out for with them. For one DO NOT get an AKC border collie unless the dogs are bred to work (herd). I'm not saying that all AKC border collies are bad but the majority of them that i've seen have the I.Q. of a rock. if you decide to get one i would get one that is ABCA O(AMerican Border Collie Association ) registered. Because the dogs that are ABCA reg. are more often than not bred from dogs that are proven to be able to work and there for they have a brain and can think for themslefs. I will warn you that theses dogs are smart and need to have some thing to do and need to be trained. they have been bred for something like 300 years, to herd livestock all day for six or seven days a week. But as long you make sure that they get plenty of exercise they should be fine.

You could also get one from a Border Collie rescue. if you go to bcrescue.org and look at the bullitn board. There are Border Collies posted on there from all over America and even Canada and the U.K . I would also suggest t he t you do g a lot of research on Border Collies before you get one just so that you know what your getting into. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at strawberryhillkennels@yahoo.com. Good luck

How about adopting a greyhound. They are a very laid back dog and are happy to go out morning and evening. The rest of the time they like to sleep. And you know they can run. They are easy to care for being short haired. The best part is if you adopt from a rescue group you get an adult dog who is already housebroken and really needs a forever home. They are done racing not done living.

If you run alot I recommend a husky although you live in an apartment this is a hard thing for any dog. Pick an older one up from the rescues. Preferable older than seven. That way they will not need as much exercise. These dogs live til eighteen so they still have a long life after that point.

Any medium or large dog w/ long legs who likes playing and running should do just fine. I'd suggest a Retriever, Dalmation, Greyhound, or even a Rottweiler.

From history to personality, and from behavior to grooming needs, the Breed Library gives you a clear picture of all dog breeds.
