Sunni:
- Believes that the Omar (RA), Abu Bakr (RA) Uthman (RA) and Ali (RA) were right people and called "The 4 rightly guided Caliphs"
- Follow the Quran and then the Hadiths
- Do Sunnahs in Salaat time
Shiites
- Believe that all 3 except Ali (RA) are evil and lying men
- claim Ali (RA) is a messenger of God while we, Sunni believe him as a simple sahaba and that Muhammad (PBUH) was is and will be the last messenger of Islam
- Do not follow Hadiths but follow Quran
- Not all do the Sunnah but the Fard prayers
Well, that is so far what I know about Sunnis and Shiites. All I can say is may Allah (SWT) bless them and end their stupid fights in Iraq and elsewhere. Amin.
Salaam

Sunni are those that follow all 4 of the Khilafah, this being Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali (not sure if this is the order or not) whereas Shias said that it was meant to go to the male bloodline and as Ali was related closely the prophet and married to Fatima they thought they should follow his leadership.
This was the first division of the ummah and you'll find Shias may have different laws as many Sunnis.
However no one has the right to say that either side is not a muslim as only Allah knows and we all expected different sects to come about it's one of the signs of judgements.
Hopefully that explains a bit better. to get more clarification probably be more helpful to ask from an Islamic forum as they usually have more learned people who can answer more fully.

Shai' say: Mohammed (pbuh) said that Ali must be his successor.
Sunnis say: he did not.
After Mohammed died, Abu Bakir was appointed the Muslims' Caliph.
A group of people said: "the Prophet told us to appoint Ali" they gathered around Ali and called Sahi'a. The rest were called Sunni. It is on that day the two sects were borne. Very unfortunate and saddens me.
Other than that, there are minor differences that should not be mentioned. The corrupt minds always try to pour gasoline over the fire to have both sects fight each other.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention there are two verses in Quran/Surat al-Ma'ida: that backs the Shia's claim but Sunnis say it does not mean Ali.
Let leave it till Judgment Day when we all know the truth.

There aren't so many difference between them: Both Sunni and Shea Muslim's believe in only one God, they accept Mohammed(s.a.v.) as the last prophet. Also there aren't any conflict between them about the Holy Quran.
The difference came on the scene when Mohammed(s.a.v.) had died. One group Muslims(later they would call as Shea) claimed that the Prophet bequeath "Ali" as his caliph. Some others (later called as Sunni) didn't agree.
I tried to explain the question in general terms.
Shorthly we can say that the difference is "historical",not "theological".

How do shiites know that ?? it's not in qura'a or in the prophet's sayings or in any thing els..it's not true...Abu Bakr(the first Kalifa)is the prophet's closest friend & first man to believe his massege....so they have no proph of what they say....
