of course. they have roots to absorb their substance, as long as there is growth, they are alive. bearing fruits is a part that you know they are in cycle, creating beautiful flowers, thick green leaves, spiral effect on their trunks, barks changing and among other things. the most favorable for me is when i climb them when i was young. those memories, i cherished..

unless you are talking about lord of the ring story, they are fantasy, they do not talk like human. actually, you can hear them mumble or whoosh if you are surrounded with trees especially the bamboo trees through the wind blows, they dance, shed and tear up when there is a storm.

i grew up in a farm surrounded with bamboos when i was in high school and i grew up in a midst of the forest when i was small that is why i can relate to nature, i love seeing the wonders.. .

Of course they are alive. They take in nutrients. They breathe. They use energy. They grow. They reproduce.

Are they alive like an animal? If that is what you had in mind then the answer to that less-important question is no.

Yes, it's fairly obvious they're alive: they grow, reproduce and die. Sentient? Conscious? Even dogs don't manage that. So no, trees don't have anything akin to a human mind, not even a really slow one or whatever you're imagining.

Yes. There has been research in the past about plants thinking and feeling. They hooked them up to a lie detector test. One time, the researcher having hooked up the plant to the lie detector, made coffee for himself and suddenly an idea occurred to him to burn the leaves with his coffee mug to see what would happen, and the plant immediately exhibited signs of 'fear' on the dials.
