Interesting question.
My sister's church was given a new pastor as "punishment" for all the complaining they did about the last one... (Long story) At any rate, the first thing he did was take down the cross in the new sanctuary they had just finished building. He told them it was a graven image. The church lost most of its population (including my sister and her family) who considered that the cross itself is a *symbol* and not a graven image.

The jews have the minora and the star of David. The cross is just a symbol for the christians. Actually, If I was christ, I'd be kinda upset every time I saw a cross because It would remind me of a pretty bad day that I had almost 2000 years ago.

You can usually tell a real christian without a cross at their neck. Just spend time with them.
Some of us feel that using a symbol like that is too close to idol worship. Some prefere a fish symbol (reminding us that all things are possible, the loaves and fishes) Some like an empty cross to rimind us of the ressurrection. Some like a crusifix, christ on the cross, to remind us theat he died for our sins.
The point is that there are lots of ways christians can identify themselves, and that if they want to publish their faith, they will.

If someone shot your father, would you walk around wearing a bullet? The use of the cross, and variations of it like the ankh or swastika, as a mystic symbol predates Christianity by centuries, it didn't become widely used until crucifixion had ceased to be common, no one who had seen that kind of suffering thought it was holy. Putting Jesus on it was simply a way for the early Christian Churches to co-opt a Pagan custom they couldn't wipe out.

I wear a cross not as a symbol of Christ’s death but of his willingness to suffer every kind of pain and every kind of humiliation so that we would never have to suffer alone. He not only gave us the gift of salvation but also his Spirit to comfort and guide, understanding every form of suffering.
Think about what an amazing, profound gift that truly is, to insure that none of use would ever have to suffer alone, and that we have the companionship of one who understands whatever pain we face.
I don’t wear a crucifix. I’m just not comfortable with that.
My cross has a mustard seed inside, which I like to use to show people when talking about faith. I don’t consider the cross and idol, but I suppose it would all depend on how you treat it. If you pray to the cross, for example.
To me, it is a symbol of the single most amazing, selfless gift in human history.

The cross is a symbol of how evil, malicious and destructive man can be to others who are different. The cross should not be a symbol for any religious group that claims to be Christian.

I am associated with Jehovah's Witnesses, and we don't use any 'symbol'such as a cross to let others know who we are. Do you know a Jehovah's Witness when you see one of us coming? Probably you do. How, without the accroutrements of mainstream religion? Our actions. Our words. Our lifestyle. The reason we don't use a cross, even though we definitely believe in the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins? Look at it this way. If you had a loved one who got shot with a handgun, would you wear a replica of a handgun around your neck to symbolize your remembrance of the manner of their death? Probably not! We are grateful to Jesus for his sacrifice, but we recognize that Jesus is in power in heaven now, and our view of him is as a powerful leader, not as a man on a torture stake! Hope this helped somewhat with your question. If you need a more detailed answer, please contact your local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and they will be happy to answer your questions more fully.

really seems to be unnecessary to wear any type of " symbol " of any Faith whatsoever unless a person wants to. there are many who do and many who don't. as far as I am personally concerned feel like my dad in the fact " I would rather see a good sermon than hear one. " Dad always felt actions spoke louder than words or symbols.

i don't know of any Christian groups that don't use the cross. I know Jehovah Witnesses don't because they don't believe Jesus died on a cross and they think it is pagan.
