ive got a new carb and distributer. heads could be wore out but dont know. engine is rebuilt and doesnt have many miles. but i sprung a bad oil leak and ran it two quarts low for a day.mabye 20 miles. heads are not rebuilt.

First off it really depends on where your leaking oil. take a look around your engine, If its from back, it could be a rear main oil seal, or in the front, it could be a front main oil seal. If the heads like you said were not rebuilt, that may be a problem, however a good rebuilt wouldn't leak from them anyway. If the rebuild wasn't done right, and the heads weren't cleaned very well (or any main connecting part for that matter) it could be that oil is leaking because of that. Also, I don't know where you live ( if its in a humid environment or not), but gaskets obsorb water from the air. If the gaskets that your mechanic used for your heads was left out in the open, or he was working on a rainy day, the gasket may have obsorbed extra water and that would effect the torque guage when he was putting the heads back on. The reason it would leak oil now (if this is the case) is because once you started driving it, it heated up the engine causeing the water trapped in the gasket to evaporate, thus making the totall mass of the gaskett less. I'm only saying all this is because I've had this problem before when I rebuilt a V8 302 hope this helped.

low oil might have claimed your piston rings. Start with a compression test. If you get a low reading, funnel a teaspoon of oil into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole. If that improves that cylinder's compression, it's rings. If not, then it's valves. But right off the bat, I'd lean towards worn out heads.

take out and check a few of your spark plugs, if there is oil on them it could be a problem with your heads, or your piston(s) are cracked, just many variations, but those are the first that come to mind

I guess you want us to point to them heads huh? Since you pointed them out 2 times. It would be my guess too, since you didn't rebuild the heads since the engine was apart. Also, double check your intake manifolds bolts. I had similar problems, and found out it was from loose bolts from my intake. Good luck.

the heads have worn valve guides and/or worn valve stem seals.

Don´t wanna lie to you but it seems that is a VERY BAD REBUILD JOBS THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR MUSTANG
