Don't be afraid to delete anything in your start up menu because they are only shortcuts. You won't be deleting the actual programs when you delete the short cut. In fact, windows will probably pop up a message informing you that you're only deleting the shortcut.

Delete away!

I guess you are talking about the startup folder. You want your computer to boot up faster without starting all the programs you don’t need. Just right-click on those you want to remove and click delete. It is safe because they are only short-cut icons.

I think you want to remove some programs from start up .
For that the best software is start up control panel which you can get from mlin.net (just 60 KB less than 2 sec time!).After installing that you can remove the programs which you don't want to start up at boot time.
Alternatively, you can use start->run-> type "msconfig.exe" and then remove the programs which you don't want to run on start up.
I hope this solves the problem.
