I usually go to http://www.tripadvisor.com

People write reviews of places they have been and you can even book reservations from that site.

I find it very useful AND there is a forum where you can ask questions.

ENJOY!

Twizi.com has a map of where all the hostels are in Paris, really worth a look so you have some idea where your hostel will be. Paris is huge. I stay at Montmartre mostly when I go (if you have seen "Amelie" it is where that was filmed and the white chiurch in a park. In Montmartre, a good deal is the Merryl hotel (link below)
The good news is that there is no way you will have to spend 50 euros a night (in the middle of summer maybe, but now much cheaper!)

You should have answers to your search when you look at http://paris.c-lafrance.com/. Click on "hebergements" which means "accomodation" to search for hotels
