Every person is different, every person reacts differently to drugs and dosages...but...as far as I'm concerned, xanax is the wonder drug of the new millenium. It helps me sleep, it has no side effects (for me), I can function fully while taking it. I am totally unfamiliar with rivotril and so can't comment on it. I have taken Paxil before (10 years ago, for about 6 months) and found it to be a nightmare, especially to go off of it, and would never take it again. Bear in mind that xanax is not an anti-depressant (like Paxil) - it is prescribed for anxiety. Totally different drug categories. Also bear in mind that no doctor (except a quack) will continue to write refills for a drug like xanax that is considered a controlled substance, unless YOU address the core issues behind your sleep problem - which are non-medical, lifestyle changes that it is up to you to "fix". I took xanax to help me sleep when I had severe pain from a fractured rib - and couldn't tolerate painkillers - but as soon as my rib was more or less healed, the doctor would no longer give me refills for the xanax.

Most people get by fine for long time with 6 hours a day of sleep.

The average need is 8 to 10 hours.

If you are not tiered during the day then you are doing fine at 4 hours of sleep. Otherwise you need life style change for batter.

Pills work for a while then they loose the effect.

Try to get tiered and retire to bed at same time every day and get out of the bed at same time every day even if you cannot sleep at least you get the needed rest.

It should take minimum 21 days to break your bed time habit.

I take Trazadone for sleep. During the day I am on Xanax to help with the anxiety. Trazadone puts me to sleep and keeps me there for at least 8 hours. I love it and wouldn't trade it in for anything.

Any type of drug is considered a foreign substance. Don't take in drug because you want to sleep. There are several natural means to induce sleep, but of course, it will take time before you get used to it. But this is better than developing drug dependence. Try taking a warm bath before going to bed, avoid strenuous exercise before sleep, eat peanuts and banana, they induce sleep. Don' take in coffee or alcohol. Eat one hour before you go to sleep. It is not good to sleep on a full stomach. Even if you are not sleepy, go to bed at the time that you want to sleep. Everyday , you condition yourself to be at your bed at that particular time. Soon, you'll be able to sleep at that particular time. It needs getting used to.
