I did mine with LearnDirect.com. Did all the studying using my own PC and apps then went online to do the tests. I could also have done it at the local college or school too.

I'm doing the ECDL course now as a requirement of my new job. My college structured the course in such a way that you do the 1st 3 modules at level 1 over 10 weeks (I started on 22/9/06) and the next 5 modules at level 2 over 20 weeks. We just work through the module guides every lesson (2 hours long) at our pace and then do mock tests after finishing the module guides until we feel ready to take the test. I admit that I was a bit nervous about doing the course as the colleagues in my previous job moaned about how difficult it was and I've never studied a formal computer course before (I learn everything through trial and error), but my friend told me that I'd find the course a piece of cake. He was right! I've already finished the first 3 modules and have started the next 5 modules early (so far I've finished the module guide and practice test on word processing) and feel almost ready to take the test for it! so, to answer your question briefly:

Do I do all the studying at home- yes and no. No-I had formal lesson times for studying the course but yes-I did a lot of work at home because I enjoyed it so much!

When I was ready for the test, did I then go and do the test-Again, yes and no. No-The course is designed to start and finish on a set date but yes-I did the tests early because I felt ready and yes-the other students in the class also did the tests when they felt ready, but others haven't done theirs yet because they're not.

If you're thinking about doing an ECDL and are asking this because you're worried about what you have to do for the course, I say that if you already know about computers, don't worry, because you'll probably find as I did that you know a lot of the things that you need to know already and can therefore get through the course more quickly.

NB. You can't sit exams until you've bought your logbook (£25)!

I hope that all this answers your question!

I did mine 1 day a week at college,we worked from a CD rom and then took the tests on-line,they were great because you know straight away if you have passed or not.
