Consciousness. Animals eat sleep mate and defend and so do human beings the only difference is their ability to question their existence. If a human being does not question their existence and their relationship with God the are considered a two legged animal. The soul of an animal will eventually come to the human form of life and have the chance to evolve. Love.
Let me explain. When God told Adam to name all the animals in the garden, Adam did not find one suitable partner he could LOVE. God said it is not good for a man to be alone, therefore He made a suitable partner for Adam. Adam said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh." This was a poem of love, because Adam saw the love of God in Eve.
There is also another example. A man (long dead) and five of his team were out in a church. Meanwhile, some other men put beads and necklaces and all sorts of things on an undressed woman, and she walked down towards the church. When the men saw her, they looked away, but the main guy stared at her, and his team said look away, but he kept on looking, tears running down his face. Such beauty, he said, sold to the eyes of men (or something similar). When it was over, the woman came back, and said, I never had anybody look at me like that. The guy stared at her because he saw God's love through her, her passion.

Only use humans have malice for other living organisms. We make up ridiculous glorifying assertions about our superiority (ie. souls) to make us feel good about wiping out other species.
