I'm cleaning my house and my front closet isn't being used for winter coats the way it should. Any fresh ideas would be great!!

Nail some support boards to the side of the closet and install plain pine or MDF shelving and turn it into a pantry or a crafting closet or even a linen closet. You can still use some of it for coats or jackets if you put one of those over-the-door coat racks on the inside of the door.

What to do with a coat closet really depends on the size of it. If everyone in your home is trying to store all sorts of things in there, then there's only one option: assign storage locations for each type of item you find in your closet. For example, dedicate a section of your garage to storing off-season sports equipment, buy a decorative umbrella stand to store umbrellas somewhere near the door, insist that sweaters be kept in bedroom closets rather than in the main closet... Purchase some clear baskets/bins to put on the top shelf for mittens, gloves, hats... and it's not a bad idea to have a small basket for single mittens or gloves just in case the other appears before winter is over.
If you have the space for it, install a closet organizer (there is a great one made by Rubbermaid which sells for $50 to $60 & is easy to install) and name a specific purpose for each section and shelf. If your closet is on the smaller side, it might be a good idea to hang hooks outside of the closet (maybe a nice mirror with hooks below, or a shelf with hooks below) for the jackets your family wears most frequently. When you have company coming over holiday time, you can hide the jackets and hang holiday decorations in their place, and in the summer you can hang some fresh flowers to dry, a pretty bag with gardening supplies... Home Depot or Lowes and maybe even Walmart, sell closet design kits. At Home Depot you should be able to find someone to help you design one to fit your needs. Take your measurements with you.
