Come on guys answer my question. I have applied to some grant companies already but I need more. I am going to India for four weeks in about 7 months and I don't have any money :(
We will be doing community work over there and that qualifies for some things.
Has anybody had success with a grant company????

Have you researched on how to fill out a grant? Make sure you state the importance of what you are doing on the grant- not just the need for money. Tell how it will benefit others in the long run. you need to write exactly what you will do with every penny given to you
example-
if you are asking for a $1000.00 grant-
$600.00 for airfare
$200.00 food and medical supplies
$200.00 irrigation supplies to provide water for village
Show you are putting money in yourself

Hotel- $400.00- covered by own expenses
Meals-$300.00 Covered by own expenses

When competing for grants - the companies want to make sure the monsy is spent wisely. Some companies prefer to spend their grant money on local agencies only because it benefits their community. You might want to try churches.

As I told you in the first answer I gave you, there are no GOVERNMENT grants for this type of purpose. There are no travel grants in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov, the two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants.

Your best bet is to seek for private grants or grants from private foundations.

The best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.

Grants are very hard to get, especially for an individual. The federal government in inundated with grant requests and most are from non-profit organizations. These non-profits get much of the money to run community aid like Womens Center, Shelter, Youth Groups and such. I sat on a board and found out how it works.
These groups hire top notch GRANT writers to get them the money. They pay the grant writer. These grant writers are very skilled and know how to word the request. It is a real science and not something you or I could do.
If you want to take the chance and see if something will fund your work, hire a grant writer. Before he writes for you he checks all his sources to see if there is money out there for your type of work. It is the best way to go and much worth it.
Make sure you check out the grant writer and his track record.

Good Luck

Grants are harder to get if you are an individual compared to a nonprofit organization or charitable institution. I thought due to the television commercials that it would be possible to locate one. Unfortunately, it was further from the truth. Your best hope is to team up with a church or charitable institution for your trip. Another way is to approach local companies for donations. I looked at national companies, and they tend to be more into nonprofit organizations than individuals when donating. And yes, it is true that there are foundations like the Gordon Founation and companies like Walmart giving grants to its employees for cause, but it is pretty competitive and not as easy as spoken about on commercials. Good luck!
