How many people are on the bus?

If the bus is full of people, each of whom would otherwise be driving a car the same distance that the bus is travelling, then the bus creates a lot less pollution than all those cars.

On the other hand, if the bus is driving from the end of its route to the garage with only the driver aboard, then it is creating pollution that would otherwise not have occurred at all (because the bus driver would not have been driving a car to the garage if there were no bus).

So it depends on the situation. We should hope that the bus companies schedule their routes so that they are reducing pollution very significantly.

While buses do have more powerful engines and therefore emit more harmful toxins into the atmosphere. Buses are generally better because more people ride them. Think about if 50 people are on 1 bus, and compare that to 50 separate cars driving then a bus is better because it is not equivalent to 50 cars. However, buses in small cities are probably used less often than in metropolis areas where they are a popular mode of transportation.
