Hi Rich,
She is definitly not too young! However please consider these few tips. First, a thermal styling spray for her to use on each section of hair. It will help protect her hair from the heat of the iron as well as help hold the dimension of the new shape (layman's terms: keep if from flopping!) My favorite one to use is L'anza's Thermal Defense.
How long should she hold each section? That depends on the type of iron you purchase. I work for an appliance manufacturer and our professional irons will get up to 430* which is pretty darn hot! I think, however, that one of our consumer irons will be perfect for her! Look for Revlon or Vidal Sassoon. She should practice taking a small section (about 1/2" thick), spray it from root to ends with Thermal Defense, placing the crimping iron fairly close to her scalp...not too close, don't want to burn her scalp.....and crimp down. Hold for about 5 seconds and open the iron. Moving down the shaft of the hair make sure that the "last crimp is the first crimp of the next crimp" and press again. When I say that I mean that she will want a continuous dimension or "pattern" if she doesn't pick up where she left off she will be left with either a hole in her pattern or two "bumps" next to each other. Gosh, I hope that isn't confusing. Sometimes I confuse myself! Make sure that you help her out and practice on a weekend or evening so that she doesn't become frustrated trying to get to school or some important event. It may take her a while to get the hang of things. Just be patient! Good luck and you're doing a great job, dad!

She's 12 and crimping hair is a tad childish, so yes, she is old enough :)

Once the crimper is hot it will take only a few seconds to crimp the hair; just hold it down for a couple seconds and release. This is a very fun style for a young girl, both of you will have a lot of fun.

The best thing to do is wet her hair and put it in braids before bed one night, so she can see what it will look like in the morning. If she likes it, then when you do crimp it, hold for a few seconds in each spot. That will keep the hair from burning.

PS: dont put hair spray or mousse in until after you are done with a section...the hair will start to burn if you put it on before.

12 is not too young to have hair style.......... if it is a newer crimper then you dont want to hold it for more then 10 sec, but if that doesn't seem to crimp, add 2-3 sec and see how that goes............by putting hairspray in first and then lightly combing you get a better hold*****if you smell burning TAKE IT OUT!!!!

its just as safe as a curling iron, and she should hold it down for aproxamitely 5 seconds depending on how hot the settings are. And no she isnt too young, thats the normal age for girls to want to start experimenting with hairstyles ;)

She is definetely old enogh for it. Hold it the crimper dowm for 5-8 sec. She might want to try heat- protecting cream too before she does it.
