My friend hid his valuables in his hamster cage and when he got burgled they didn't get stolen!
But if I was a burglar I wouldn't wanna put my hand in a stinky, vicious hamster's cage!
The only drawback is that you'll have to buy a hamster though...

Why are you asking? Which is the first thing a Police Officer would ask.
The master bedroom is the first place to look for valuables, and under the mattress is where you will find the hand-guns.
The freezer is old hat, so that is the next place. The TV and bulkier items will not generally be touched by the average career burglar. They know that jewels, cash and handguns are easier to conceal and transport. And they plan the burglary to last under 5 minutes. They are in and out quickly, the absolute best way to avoid detection.
However, the amateur burglar will go for the TV, but they are usually quite sloppy in their work, as they are usually fueled by a "frantic" state such as an addiction. They are also the easiest to catch and arrest, which is why you hear so much about them.
A loud barking dog is still, by far, the best defense against home intrusion. (short of a very expensive alarm system) Stop it before it happens, and the "signs" of a dog are the best deterrent. But don't be lulled into security by posting a sign, this may work, but most burglars "case" the house before the hit, not hard to figure out if a dog lives there or not. Large dog droppings in the yard would be an added bonus IF you are going with just the sign. Which is why I let the doggies in my yard. Dog poop may be a minor annoyance, but certainly better than the absolute sense of violation one feels after they have been burgled.
Peace.

Some security experts recommend purchasing fake wall outlets that cost about $5. They look real and have a hinged inner compartment to hide jewelry and other small valuables. Burglars also look for anything that is portable, so make sure that your safe is bolted to the floor or wall. Therefore, they are unable to grab it and run out the door. Most of the burglars' attention is aimed towards the master bedroom, as it is the place where the adults keep their expensive personal belongings.

Any good burglar will look everywhere. One person answered in the pockets of their clothing. While it is true most burglars dont steal clothes, this is such a COMMON place to hide things most burglars look here. It is so simple to "pat down" a rack of clothng and feel if anything is in them. I could tell you 100's of unique places I have been told in interviews, but i don't wish to make public that information. Every home should purchase a good quality safe AND secure it to the floor in their home. For less than $1000 you will have the best security you could hope for!! Being a police officer I have the advantage of talking to crooks, they will avoid a decent safe as it is too time consuming to breach!

I tape my valuables to the windows so burglars will know where to look and not destroy my other things, like my photos of Rod Stewart in gold sequence stretch pants and such. It's weird though how many times I have been robbed.
Tip: Leave the door unlocked and open, this avoids costly repairs on windows.

Professional thieves leave the residence neat and tidy. Amateurs trash the house. They will go through every room, but the kitchen will remain fairly untouched. The cookie jar and sugar bowls are obvious, but there are so many places, the thieves don't like a time consuming search.

In books, the last ever place a burglar will lok for things is in books, get some crappy books, cut the insides out like you see in the movies and you can put money and jewellry in them.

My fav spots are to hide stuff in the pockets of my cloths in my closet. WHO STEALS CLOTHS??? I also hide stuff in my tampon and pad box. Pull you carpet back and stash stuff there. Buy a safe that you can bolt to the ground. Those fireproof safes are so cheap. I have opened one with a bobby pin before. Also, as long as you dont use a trashcan that you throw liquid into, you can stash your good under the bad in the trash can. WHO WOULD LOOK THERE???

The best place to hide something is in the open, but disguised as something worthless, much like the beer can/soda can "safes" for small jewelry items.
