I've experienced the holiday season in Istanbul (late december 2001/early january 2002) was excellent. It is a really interesting city with loads to do and would deserve several weeks alone without considering the rest of Turkey. The people were by an large really welcoming and helpful. There are always a few who are looking to take advantage or harass you but I found it less so than in other similar places and no more than a minor nuisnace.
The food is diverse and excellent and the city has a whole shows lots of signs of blended cultures.
I would especially recommend some of the more spectacular churches, mosques and palaces (Aya Sophia, Blue Mosque and Topkapi for example) as well as nosing around the back streets and markets. I never felt unsafe anywhere and numbered taxi's were plentiful so if you did you could easily jump in one.
For celebrating westerners the pleasent surprise was that alcohol was pretty freely available and the New Year celebration saw plenty of clinking of glasses by muslims, christians and others alike.
Alll in all a great city and reports from other parts of the country suggest to me that it is a pretty enjoyable place all round.
Watch out for the traffic though, can be a bit hairy....

You will really enjoy Turkey. It is very important that your travel arrangements are done through a good company. I went several times with a company called Tourkey, their web si is www.tourkey.org
Turks are very friendly people and it is a beautiful country. You will love it. It will be pretty cold when you go so you will miss out on the beaches. But depending n what cities you will cover there are many great places to see.
Although Turks are predominantly Muslim, there is still a BUZZ in the air about New Years during the time you will travel. every house has Christmas trees and they exhange gifts on New Years Eve.

I went to Turkey last year and loved it. Try to stay down in the area near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. Make sure you go to the large market there. It is also fun to go on the ferry. There are many great things to see in Turkey. I went to Mt Ararat on the eastern side, Ephesis by train, and also from Diyaborker I went to Haran where there are behive houses. Turkey has lots to see and the people are very nice. I would love to go there again.

Where are you going? Singapore is NOT in Turkey.

If you get to Istanbul-------do go to the Blue Mosque and plan on alot of time at the Grand Bazaar.
