I lived in Russia and slept with a Russian and that doesn't really work. Everyone loves teaching you to swear and stuff, but are less keen to teach you cases/tenses etc.
You can learn the alphabet by yourself online. It's pretty easy. www.masterrussian.com is a good website. When you know the alphabet, you can read Russian because it's very phonetic.
Try one of the computer software packs like Rosetta Stone. It's fine for learning pronunciation and vocabulary but unless you are a linguistics expert, you will have trouble gleaning the grammar rules from these. Some books to try are: Teach Yourself Beginners Russian Grammar by Daphne West (ISBN 0-340-77549-1), Essentials of Russian Grammar by Nicholas Maltzoff (ISBN 0-8442-4244-6) and A Comprehensive Russian Grammar by Terence Wade (ISBN 0-631-20757-0). Of course, you could look into a class at your local college as well.
When you can hold a basic conversation and read the language, that is the time to go to Russia. It's the most amazing country i've ever been to.
удачи! (good luck)

I agree with the answer above - you need to learn the alphabet first. Then how you go from there depends very much on your personality and your age. When I learnt the Persian alphabet I remember buying a newspaper in Persian and getting a real thrill from recognising words like "Tony Blair" and "atom bomb" in Persian. There are loads of English cognate words in Russian too (student, business man) so you could try that.
Look at the BBC website for short (and long) news articles in Russian. You can compare these stories with the main stories in English .... maybe there will be some overlap.
Learn some modern poetry by heart (a short poem, not an epic). It helps to internalise the structures. How about Anna Akhmatova? See the link below, where you can listen to one of her poems.
Good luck!

Like any other language, it will take time and practise to learn russian. Try and listen to some online russian radio stations to try and get a hint of what the pronounciation is like (that's the most difficult part) or maybe watch russian tv. Also visit the country, i always find the best way to learn a language is by visiting that country where you are completely surrounded by the language.

The best way to learn a language if you don't want to spend a lot of money for private lessons and such. Is to immerse yourself into the culture. Watch Russian Films, listen to Russian music (like pop and rock), you can even purchase study books from your book store to learn to write and speak Russian. I use Rosetta stone, but it can be very pricey! But there are many language software available, there are even free downloadable audio recordings to learn how to pronounce and say the words. But, I'm sorry to say, if you want to learn a language, fluently. fast is not the way to do it. Learning a language takes a lot of Patience, time, love, and an effort to learn. It takes years to learn and perfect the language and grammar. Russian is also a difficult language to learn as well.

The Year 1 course at the School of Slavonic and East Euro. Studies (London) will teach you Russian to way beyond A level in 1 year. It's so good, other countries send the diplomats/spies to learn and Japanese corporations send their execs.

Go there and take some language courses over there, so you'll need to use whatever you manage to learn. Good luck, Russian is extremely difficult!
