I speak in tongues and have received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit....it is a gift as Rachael H states above....... and it is not something someone can teach another....it is purely under the unction and guidance of the Holy Spirit.....and for those who don't think it is for today and /it is made up......you are truly missing out on one of the best giftings of the Holy Spirit......seek and you will find the truth about it...

During the time of Pentecost which was spoken of after the death of Jesus the people came together and did speak in tongues as you say. The Bible says all will have special gifts and this is one of them but it also says there should be an interpreter to tell the congregation what God is saying thru these people. Some people really have this gift and their are some who hear the same phrases spoken over and over until they can repeat them although I often wonder if they have a clue what they mean.

Its not that they "teach" people to speak in "tongues" in Pentecostal churches.
They believe that the gifts God gave to the disciples are still available to disciples in the current day. That would include a gift of being able to speak the languages of those one desires to spread God's word to. (I don't know which disciple was gifted with this ability...)
When I was a regular in a Pentecostal-related church, once in a long while someone would get so moved by the sermon and their own prayerful thoughts that they would stand up and speak in an excited and almost indecipherable way.
Others in the room, expecting "speaking in tongues" would interpret this as the speaking of another language.
I, being more of a skeptic, just heard a lot of stuttering and repetition of regular English words and phrases, perhaps with common french or Spanish words thrown in...
Please understand that these are generally good people, not cultists or whack jobs, and it does no good to ridicule others for their devoutly-held beliefs.

Jonathan, why not put aside man's -isms ... Jesus knows what he wants, he only set up one church, the New Covenant has NOT changed. All his disciples and those they were sent to spoke in tongues, it was how it was judged *precisely when* people received God's (invisible) Spirit. Sadly many so-called "Christians" have replaced this with "confirmation" by man. They presume to judge their own or other people's hearts as being saved because they pray a (man-made) "sinners prayer" or other confession. Why not just follow Jesus, like the apostles did, get yourself to Acts 2 (where Jesus' Church began), readd it, put yourself there without any pre-concieved "baggage". The message will be clear and obvious. Note: "the gift of tongues", given to some (2 or 3 only, see 1 Cor. 14:27), refers *specifically* to the meetings-use of tongues, *giving* to the church. So, like all my brothers & sisters, I pray in tongues privately, but, in a meeting, I may or may not receive "a gift of tongues". The same applies to all the other attributes listed with tongues in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10. Jonathan, you really should visit a church like the one detailed in the New Testament, where all members have the above and where the gifts are actually used in an orderly way (no emotionalism). .

First of all, you cannot teach anyone to speak in tonuges. To speak in tongues is a gift that God does not give to everyone. It cannot be taught. There are many different gifts that God blesses people with, The gift of tongues, the gift of interpretation, the gift of healing.
1 Corinthians 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
You cannot not teach something that is a gift from God.
1 Corinthians 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
Those churches that say they can teach tongues are not teaching the true word of God, but their own man made docrine. stay away from those churches. God is not there.

There are many types of Pentecostals and some like the UPC United Pentecostal Jesus only folks require all their members to speak in tongues.
Assembly of God and other Pentecostal churches don't require it, but it is coveted.
A great many Pentecostal churches do teach their members to do this, but a lot teach it covertly, that is they teach people how, without them knowing they are being taught.
It is a learned experience and not supernatural.

I did have someone try to teach me once, but that is ridiculous. The gift of tongues comes when one is "baptized in the Holy Spirit" Check out the book of Acts, the first occurance of this happens in the beginning of that book. It isn't learned, it just happens one day and these strange words start pouring out. Most of the people in my church do have this gift. Not all churches do it. It doesn't have a bearing on salvation like some teach as far as how I believe.

Speaking in tongues is a gift from God and is not something you can be taught. many people are deeply religious and filled with the holy spirit yet never speak in tongues. It is only given to some not all. A great many people will profess to have received this gift in order to feel or seem special and draw in worshippers. Make up your own mind. Simply be aware that if there is one speaking in tongues there has got to be one who can translate as well or it is not of God. I am pretty sure satan can speak in tongues too.

Yes, many do. The more conservative Pentecostals do not. Even though they do believe in Biblical tongues, they are not part of the 'modern tongues movement' that plagues most all Charismatic and many Pentecostal denominations.
