Yes, Pepto Bismol *IS* one of the human 'drugs' which is generally very safe for dogs (NOT cats, however.) The dosage is based on weight, but there is a very wide safety margin on that. 5-10cc (1-2 teaspoons) is generally quite safe in normal-sized adult GSDs.
It's fine to try that for today, being that's it's the weekend. But you should really take a fecal sample to your veterinarian tomorrow and have it tested for intestinal parasites (worms and protozoa) that you can't see with your naked eye....even if the diarrhea seems to be improving. Because if they are there, the diarrhea will only come back if they are not specifically treated. It's a very inexpensive test (usually around $12-30, depending on where you live.) This needs to be done EVEN IF your dog takes monthly heartworm prevention....since none of them protect against ALL of the intestinal parasites, and not even Interceptor or Sentinel (the best ones) are 100% effective for whipworm prevention.
If the fecal is negative and the diarrhea persists, you'll need to take your dog in for an examination to determine the cause before he/she gets dehydrated.
And I agree....do not feed any people food. That is a COMMON cause of gastrointestinal and pancreatic issues in dogs.
ETA: 1.Fosters and Smith is not a reputable source for medical information on dogs. That would be like asking Michael Crighton (the novelist and TV show producer) what dosage of any medication to give to a child. (He is an MD, but decided to do something different with his life after obtaining his degree.)
2. We treat intestinal issues in dogs with boiled chicken and rice....NOT hamburger and rice, no matter how well-rinsed. Beef will often aggravate the situation, but chicken generally won't.

I am the medical director at our local humane society, and we use it on DOGS all the time. NOT CATS!!!! The correct dosage can be given to you by your vet. The reason I say you should contact him is because your vet knows the history of the dog, and would know if there is any reason why this treatment could conflict with him. Always check with your vet prior to giving any medication not prescribed by your vet.
If your dog has diarrhea, the first thing you should do is pull their food and monitor their water for 24 hours. Remember that if this situation should ever occur again. You will also want to make an appointment with your if this would last any longer than 24 hours. Hope this helps! Good luck with your dog!

Only if given in small doses. I had a basset once that ate everything, including broken glass or plastic. The vet said not to induce vomiting (hydrogen peroxide) but give her a tbsp of Pepto to coat the stomach and make everything go through easily. So a little won't hurt in an emergency like that.

There are several people medicines that we can give dogs.
Among them is Pepto Bismol and Aspirin.
Now that your Mom gave the dog Pepto, you need to figure out what caused the diarrhea so you can keep it from happening again as dogs can get dehydrated as easily as humans when they get diarrhea.
My dogs can get a slight case of diarrhea if I feed them people food so I avoid that.
Whenever I give them canned dog food they get diarrhea so I avoid giving them straight canned dog food,I mix it with their dry dog food.
If I want to "treat" them,I give them regular dog treats or biscuits.

My vet says it is ok. I would use the dose you would if your dog were a person. Example my 50lbs dog is about the size of a kid under 12 so I give that dose. A dog under 15lbs would be like an infant.. etc.
Also I used the pills or chewables depending what was on sale. The liquid is really icky/

Yes, we used to recommend people try that at home if the dog had no other life-threatening symptoms. But NEVER give it to a cat.
