It's really not unusual for a successful fighter to want to retire in his prime while still at the top. It's only unusual that they actually end up doing so, either because they lose and then try to come back or they find out their finances aren't as in order as they had thought.

Mayweather announcing he would retire soon may get him a little more attention, but I don't think it would be enough to affect whether or not De la Hoya fights him. Actually, I think one of Oscar's main reasons for wanting to fight him is that Mayweather is still somewhat young and in his prime. If Mayweather is already planning on retiring soon, that may take some glamour out of De la Hoya's plans to end his career prematurely.

If this is a stunt intended to make the fight, Mayweather will have to do a lot better and attract a lot more attention somehow. De la Hoya has the power to put the attention there if he wants, but Mayweather just saying he wants to retire soon doesn't do much.

I didn't hear him say he was retiring last night..and I disagree with you on the boring part, if it was boring it was because Baldomir could not touch Mayweather..what we saw last night was a work of art....Floyd won that fight with one hand..which he hurt early in the fight...and still did not lose one round..its allot of Mayweather haters out there..I used to be one, because he is an asshole..FYI
fights are going to be boring if its one sided and the other guy can't touch him. Mayweather is in a class by himself right now....POUND FOR POUND THE BEST BOXER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, and if you think different, you don't know boxing. Oscar will get embarrassed if he fought Mayeather.
