My husband serves in the US military. He is over there to defend our rights and freedoms, along with all the other men and women, reguardless of race, religion, or creed. To me, it doesn't matter if it has been classified as a "Just War" or not, I can't believe that my husband is committing a sin when he is following orders like that.

You are correct that the Chuch holds that the War in Iraq does not qualify as a just war under the Just War Theory. However, the soldiers in Iraq are not committing a mortal sin. If they evaluated the option of joining the military and not joining and their conscience says they needed to join the military, we need to respect the decision of the informed conscience. If anyone is committing a mortal sin, it is the politicans in Washington who are continuing this war.

There has been no definitive statement from the official Catholic Church about whether the Iraq war is just or not.

A couple of bishops are on record as saying it's not ... and that is their opinion, only.

In complicated matters like this, it's important for everyone involved to get their own conscience involved, and then act accordingly.

No, those who are fighting in Iraq are not committing grave sin.

How can you accuse someone of grave sin who is sincerely fighting in order to protect their country and the freedom of others. This is like saying that killing someone in self defense is a grave sin.

I believe somewhere in the bible it says all authority on earth is in place because of God. Also, it says somewhere that if you are in a position to serve, you serve, that is your duty. I'm not good at remembering verses, sorry, but I can look it up.

I am Catholic and think that serving under the authority put in place by God and serving according to your position is accepting God's word and not a grave sin.
