First understand that your computer did nothing "all by itself". There was something that you did to make this happen. Please learn a lesson from this once your computer is working again. To protect yourself, you need to do the following:
1- Update your operating system(windows update) weekly.
2- Install and REGULARLY update an antivirus. As others have noted, AVG is free and is really good. Personally, I swear by Avast (also free - link below).
3- Stop file sharing and downloading "free" music.
4- NEVER click on links on an email that you get from someone you dont know.
5- ALWAYS be cautious with emails from someone you know (THEY might be infected).
6- Be very careful with IM's (MySpace, AOL, IRC, etc) as they are famous for spreading the bad stuff.
7- Dont go to websites that you really dont need to go to (hacker or porn sites)

Now to clean your computer - a lot of people are going to tell you to do this and do that. Unless you really know your computers inner workings, I do NOT recommend that you do this. You can really hose some things and lose everything you have. My advice - take it to a local computer repair shop and be prepared to spend about $100 for the lesson you just learned - assuming you also follow my 1st paragraph.

Sorry to be so direct, but its the only way to say it. :-P

Microsoft encountered similar problems on their 45,000 systems at Redmond Campus, on the Microsoft.com, MSN.com BUT, never, on the Hotmail.com!

Hotmail.com has run Linux since before the purchase by Microsoft in 1997!

All the 45,000 computers at Microsoft.com, MSN.com, and the Aruba Routers/ Firewalls now run ON or behind, Linux computers!

Run a LiveCDrom, and see that your system can operate upto 50X faster!

When I show this LiveCDrom, they always wipe their computers, and install http://pclinuxos.com to the hard drive! Good bye all Microsoft DRM, all the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions", all popups!

No more interruptions by all of the "Trusted Partners" of Microsoft, who seem to have their own private BACK DOORS into my browser!!!

Goodbye, Multiple Convicted Pirate, and Felon, Microsoft!!!

http://pclinuxos.com is FREE and the choice is YOURS! FINALLY!

no worry...

after reading question I'm sure that ur computer is infected by some worm, it might be effecting the windows exe files to run,

use any strong anti virus to scan system drive, or you can do on line scan for free. no need to install any anti virus for that.

please let me know if it is not solving your problem.

your computer is bugged. The best solution is to reinstall Windows in order to make sure security of your data and private files. Make sure you back up all your important data before reinstalling windows. Disconnect your system from the internet before you start backing up. If you have an antivirus software, run a thorough system scan before reinstallation.
