Will it last longer?

Glass will keep you milk fresher, longer. The glass has the advantage (over a paper carton) of being completely airtight AFTER it's opened, because the glass milk bottles usually have a snap-on lid. If you open a paper carton in the traditional way (by tearing the carton open at the top, forming that little triangle), the seal will never be intact again.

Aside from the possibility of breakage (and injury), the only real disadvantage of a glass bottle is light transmission. Paper cartons, as well as those recyclable plastic bottles, prevent light from reaching your milk (light also affects the freshness and shelf-life of milk). The thing is, they're designed that way to keep the milk fresher AT THE STORE, not in your home...the little light in your fridge turns off when you close the door!

Glass bottles (again, aside from safety/breakage issues) are probably the best way to store milk (and other dairy products). I think the main reason why they're not more widely used (anymore) is because of their weight.

Milk Glass Containers

If there are kids in the house who could drop the glass and make a cutting hazard I would avoid glass. Milk stays such a short time before you use it that cardboard is adequate.

Around here they are pushing the idea of UV-resistant containers for milk to keep all their vitamins from being lost so bottles are not considered good.

I've never had milk that came in glass. I buy it in the plastic jugs all the time. I have had it in the cardboard containers but I avoid those whenever possible because the milk tends to take on the taste of the cardboard very quickly. But they all last the same amount of time.

I don't know if it will last longer, but my husband swears the milk that comes in the glass bottles tastes better. I think it's all in his head, personally.

Glass. It keeps it colder as well. I even keep water in the fridge in the glass bottles because it gets so cold!
