As a old time photographer it was a general belief that keeping batteries refrigerated prolonged their battery life, sort of the same as putting food in the frig. This meant they when you got around to using them months later most likely they would be still near their peak power. However, it was always advisable to bring them up to room temperature before putting them in whatever device, so they didn't "sweat" condensate, and rust out the battery compartment.

Batteries use a chemical process to produce the output energy, most chemical processes have temperature as a factor; higher temperature facilitates the process and lower temperatures does the opposite. The temperature factor is also used in some occasions by some who heat used batteries to get that last "punch" out of them.

Some people think that refrigerating batteries will give them a longer shelf life, but I don't think so.
