We are a grp of 4 frnds (1 cupl) planing to go. Is it safe? Primary reason is to shop, is it worth the effort. The Wikitravel page quotes dangers and prices that are very similar to India.

Every country has some dangers, but most should not deter one from travelling. There are problems in the south of Thailand, but if you plan to stick to the major tourist areas like Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, there have been no major incidents, especially against tourists.
Good place to get things at amazing prices. Bargaining is the name of the game, and the people are very nice and friendly.
Exercise the same caution as you would in any new place.

15 million tourist can't be wrong. Yes i think Bangkok would be a trip you will never forget. You have more then just Bangkok. Up north to Chiang Mai, down south like Krabi or Koh Samui for the beach activities. Thailand is a key tourist location for many Australia tourist.

Silk is inexpensive there; I didn't shop much so I don't know what else is inexpensive.(besides the food - amazing)

The recent coup issued an apology for anyone who was "inconvenienced". The soldiers did not carry loaded firearms, lest someone be harmed. Thailand depends on tourists for foreign capital - the last thing they want to do is scare visitors away!

The skytrain is very cheap & modern & fast - don't hesitate to use it if it runs where you want to go. Best part of all is being out of the notorious Bangkok traffic - daily gridlock. The tuk-tuk drivers turn their engines off when the traffic stops; you'll know that you'll be there for a while.

I can't answer your question, really, because only you know what you are looking for. Hope this helps. And don't drink the water - even Thai people drink bottled water.

Have a great trip!

don't go there if you want to shop you could go to your local shopping centre instead. Whilst its good to shop there is a lot more to do. Yes its safe. You can explore temples, wonder the streats, eat streetfood, Never looked at Wikitravel however from experience the prices are higher than India, as are the dangers, however if you excersise caution you will be as safe as your home location

It is safe to go to Thailand. You need not worry about the coup, it is over. Bangkok is safe, yhe danger travel alert is mainly for the southern region.

Shopping is marvelous. That is why you find people from all over the world there to do their shopping.

Chatuchak Weekend Market, Pratunam Wholesale Centre, Suan Lum Night Bazaar, Sukhumvit and Silom Night Markets, MBK Centre, Siam Square, and many more malls not mentioned. You will like it there for shopping.

I've been going to Bangkok every year and at least 10 times now. It is definitely worth the trip and its the place where most westerners like in Asia. They have anything from cheap imitation goods to cheap road stalls products to cheap goods in shopping centres. The food there is good and affordable too. =D

Bangkok is very beautiful and fun; but very polluted. I would pick Hanoi Vietnam, very beautiful too. Cheaper hotels, food and drink. Very safe and good bargains at the markets. Only my opinion. Cheers

its is quite safe, try to 'blend in' with the locals meaning don't show off your expensive jewellery or new stuffs or you might be a target for thiefs and always stick together, don't go anywhere alone and you will be fine. just go there, have fun, you will love it for its shopping!!!
