I began learning American Sign Language my sophomore year in high school. My friend was having a surgery that would either fix his hearing, or make him deaf. It was a wonderful experience, learning the language. Now I use some simple baby signs with my toddler, and it has helped us communicate better.

We were taught the alphabet in elementary school. Then in high school the vocal director had some of us sign the words to a song while the choir sang it to the audience. I still remember most words I learned. So I'm not proficient at all, but still do a sign or two to my huband, who has no idea what I'm talking about!

I have a cousin and her husband who are both profoundly deaf. One of their children is as well. So I learned Amslan to communicate with them.
