I wish I had the answer to your question. I have had Multiple Sclerosis since I was 20, and my husband has Type 1 Diabetes. He has had it since he was 17.
I am now 37, he is 44 now. We know how important Stem cell research is....what an understatement.
I had to stop working 14 years ago because of cognitive problems from MS, and stop driving 3 years ago due to a combination of cognitive skills and vision problems....
I urge people to vote for candidates who are pro stem cell research.....if that is important to them. Most people these days know of someone who can be helped by this.
When I saw Nancy Reagan become a voice for this, I knew there was hope!
The way I see it, MS has changed my life in ways I could never have imagined with not being able to work, or drive, and I am in a considerable amount of pain,(don't get me started on medical marijuana) but Diabetes is a life threatening situation. Shouldn't that be enough said?
I used to think that if someone like George Bush or his daughters had MS and was in the pain I was in, that would change his mind, but I now acknowledge that some people will never change their minds on certain issues. So I will pour my energy into taking care of our pet family, and my Diabetic husband, and my own health. It never hurts to have an extra "voice" to write editorials and voice opinions.
Hopefully, election day will bring change.......
I would love to see your Type 1 Diabetes cured!

It isn't as much they are against the stem cell research as they feel that it will lead to more abortions, cloning and other fearful events. In reality if they would do the research and read up stem cells can be collected from umbilical cords which is done after a baby is born if the mother will alow it and it in no way harms baby or mother. As far as abortion whether we like it or not it is going to happen so why shouldn't some good come out of something so horrible. This isn't about playing God this is about improving the quality of life for many people some as an infant some as a geriatric patient. I feel if some of these almighty politicians had a child that was paralyzed or dying from a complication from a diesease such as diabetes then their opinion would change 100% but it is like everything else it doesn't affect them so who cares. Ans it is proven to work. I live in Missouri and the papers here followed two different men who went to China to get the procedure done, one had ALS and the other was paralyzed from a car wreck and they BOTH had made dramatic improvements after 2 months. It is sad when an American has to go to a country such as China to get something done just because of all the hypocrits and such we have running America.

The most magical of stem cells are the embryonic ones. An embryo is a fertilized egg, before it is big enough to be called a fetus. The cells in an embryo have a great deal of potential because they haven't developed into anything specific (like skin cells or muscle cells or nerve cells) yet. These cells, when cultivated, can be convinced to become anything we need, which is why they are so important to research. Adults produce stem cells, too, but they aren't as flexible as embryonic stem cells.
The problem people have, of course, is the endless debate about what constitutes "life." Is an embryo alive? Anti-abortion people say yes, and worry that if we allow scientists to create embryos to harvest stem cells, it will start society down a slippery slope of destroying "life" for research purposes. It's a simple case of science vs. religion.
There are some stem cell lines that scientists are allowed to use, but some scientists say they need more. I'm not sure how close anyone is to a cure for anything, though. Scientists are working on it, but even with all of the stem cells in the world I don't know if we can hope for cures so soon.
I'm so sorry about your diabetes, and I'll hope that scientists will make some breakthroughs for you!

Ignorance. They don't understand where the stem cells are attained from and what benefits they might have. Stem cell research is going to happen, but maybe those against would be willing to sign away their right to benefits from any advanced gained from it. Let them put there life where their mouth is.
Embryonic stem cells can be obtained from excess products of in vitro fertilization.

People are against embryonic stem cell research because the government wants to CREATE embryos and use the stem cells from the ones that they created. -they are going to purposefully fertilize an egg to create life and then destroy it for the stem cells
Many people think that they are just going to use stem cells from aborted fetus this is not the case.

You can't equate someone being against government funding of something with their being against it taking place.
I'm not against you painting your house, but I don't want to pay for it. I'm sure you'd pick a nice color and do a good job, but it isn't my house.
Now, on the research, it's possible that any of us might have a problem research might solve, and it then becomes a matter of probability that the investment is better than other uses of government money.
That's the case that hasn't been made. We just aren't convinced we'll get more from stem cell research than we will from using that money to reduce the national debt. We're fine with you using your money or organizing fund raisers for it.

If legalized, stem cell researchers would pay a fortune for any willing and unfortunate donor that needs quick cash. Good idea?

People are against it because they don't understand stem cell research, and they can't understand it because they've been manipulated into believing it's immoral. It's a shame so many people are so stupid.

I don't understand it either. Stemcells are taken from unborn fetuses, which are biological life, not human life. Human life will not exist until birth, when the human soul enters the body with its first breath (the slap on the butt). There are plenty of Biblical references on that, Yet ignorant people think they know better than God.
