Aurelius Augustinus, Augustine of Hippo, or Saint Augustine (November 13, 354 – August 28, 430) was one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity. In Roman Catholicism, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fountainheads of Reformation teaching on salvation and grace. Born in Africa as the eldest son of Saint Monica, he was educated and baptized in Italy. His works—including The Confessions, which is often called the first Western autobiography—are still read around the world.

If you want biographical information, you can check out Wikipedia. In my opinion the two most important forms of influence that Augustine holds over the contemporary church are these:
1) Augustine first articulated the doctrine of the bondage of the will and of free grace that eventually became Calvin's docrine of predestination. Only because of Augustine did the doctrine of the Reformation shake out the way it did.
2) Augustine took the command of the householder from the Gospels "Compel them to come in" to justify the use of government force against heretics. After all, he reasoned, isn't it better for a person to be abused by the government in this life than to suffer eternally in Hell?
Thus, Augustine could be considered the grandfather both of official church persecution and of the docrine of free grace/predestination. A mixed legacy, to say the least.
