Seen in fulham, london in april it was about a foot and a half high, looked like it could a bird of prey!

Sounds like a Jay. Grey / Brown with a blue streak over the head.

If it was tall and thin, it would be a heron.
Usually seen hanging around at lakes, rivers, fish farms etc.

a heron is a good educated guess but i wonder if the size you give means this could be a egret
