When my friends move into new apartments or homes I pack up a small box of "Unpacking Survival Supplies". These are things that sadly are usually in the last box you are looking for, but the items you'd like to have immediately. My basic box goes something like this:
1 or 2 inexpensive coffee cups
tea bags or coffee bags that only need hot water
small box of sugar cubes or packets
disposable salt & pepper shakers
plastic spoons
powdered non-dairy creamer
sandwich supplies or a gift certificate for a local pizza place
Of course you can add other things (based on who is getting the box) but a few other things you can include are:
toilet paper
paper towels/napkins
trial size toothpaste
trial size shampoo/conditioner
soaps
disposable razors

I think wine is to bring joy to the house, but I do not remember. See Jimmy Stewart in that Xmas movie, ZUZU's flowers, the savings and loan flounders because uncle somebody loses the deposit, everytine a bell rings, an angel gets it's wings, you know, that one.. Anyway, when the savings and loan finances the housing, Mrs. brings bread and salt and wine to the house, and says the line.
Ha! Looked it up. The rest of it is:Wine so your life is always sweet, and a candle so you always have light.
