How come we as human beings are dumb enough to put restrictions on that? God only loves you if you're "one of us"? If you're straight, and only have sex once you're married, and believe certain things, and don't disagree with your religious leaders? If God has said he is love, how do we get away with developing the idea that God hates human beings who don't interpret his word the way we do?

Disclaimer - I'm not a believer, and I know about the whole "love the sinner, hate the sin" idea. I just want to know where we get the arrogance to enforce our interpretation of what God hates by shunning different people. Surely we should include everyone and let whatever God there is do the judging when and if it comes to judgment day?

It may be the craziest thing of all for anyone to claim to know the mind of a vast and awesome God, and for that reason a humbleness should be a part of our practice .... recognizing that we really, really, do not know it all. I think if we, as people of many faiths, would converse more then condemn we would see the thread of truth, the thread of love, faithfullly running through ... but, you are right, we do not look well ... it is so much easier to have rules and security ... love is scary.

All the things that God does not want us to do cause harm to ourselves or other people. Sometimes we are not aware of the harm, but it exists nonetheless. For instance, sex creates a spiritual union between two people. Adultery or multiple partners can destroy that bond and subsequent bonds are weaker.

God wants us to love all, forgive all, show mercy and judge no-one. That is not arrogance, it is quite the opposite. You are right that God does the judging, however, outside of Christ we would all be found guilty, because we have all failed to live as I have described. Fortunately for us, Jesus Christ allowed Himself to be punished for everything we have done or will do wrong. The same goes for every person that has ever or will ever live.

To deny so great a grace is arrogance indeed, because to stand in our own righteousness alone is folly. We have no righteousness of our own. The righteousness of the best of us is like a robe that has been pulled through the sewers, covered with medical waste, and washed in industrial slurry.

Do you have children? We love our children, but don't let them do whatever they choose. We know what's best for them, and because of this we set rules. God is our heavenly Father!

The other thing is, WE as Christians DON'T set rules for people to follow, God does...the Bible. We only try to live by them.

I think you got somethings wrong - 1st-Christians should not shun people for not believing not should they place judgment as God will do that. BUT placing judgment is different then judging the behaviors and knowing if it's wrong or right.

2nd- Christians don't believe that God hates human beings that don't follow in His ways. God loves everyone and longs to have a relationship with us all. But we do have free choice, and as our own children do, will be disciplined accordingly.

Because the judeao-christian god is the source of evil: Isaiah 45:7 "I make peace and create evil. I the Lord do all these things." Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it? Lamentations 3:38 "Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?" Jeremiah 18:11 "Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you." Ezekiel 20:25,26 "I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live. And I polluted them in their own gifts...

Claiming religious authority is the way that they control people, and if they let people think that god would always love you then the people would have no need of them.

You are right. We should leave the judging to God. However, the bible does tell us what we must do to earn God's favor and acceptance. He is our Father. If you disrespected your dad, he would still love you, but you would still be punished for disobeying and disrespecting him, right?
