And are the ones with printer packages any good?
Thanks everyone.

I like the Kodak EasyShare line of digitals. Some have packages too. Mine cost around $180 US. Very simple to use, has many great features & small enough to carry around easily.'

If you use your computer, you can use any printer with any camera. Some printers do not need a computer, so look for "Pict-Bridge" capable cameras and printers.

Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for baing a 10 MP camera. The continuous drive is a little slower, but the files are larger, so that's no surprise. I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.

With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will still need a decent memory card as discussed above, though.

My wife was looking for a good digital camera 1 year ago and we narrowed it down to 2 cameras:

Kodak Easyshare DX6490 (10X OPTICAL ZOOM!)
Fuji Finepix 5600 (also has 10x optical zoom)

At the time, the Kodak was £220 and the Fuji was £230. We settled on the Fuji and my wife has been very happy with it. It is 5MP and the lens allows you to screw on filters and also 2x lenses and 0.75x wide angle lenses. The good news for you is that Dixons are now selling it for £141.50 right now - an absolute bargain! Check out this link:

We thought we had got a bargain when it came out at £230!
Here is a review of the camera:

(note: it is called a 5200 in the USA but it is the same camera)
My wife wanted a 10x optical zoom because she went to South Africa and wanted a good zoom to be able to see the animals when she went to the Kruger National Park. She has been really happy with this camera.

The answer depends on what you want out of your camera
Do you want to shoot pix which are in low lit areas ? do you like taking pix in action or close ups or still life or landscape ? If u wish to have all of them , consider the Nikon Compact Digital Cameras L1, L2 or L3. Most of them come with a 6 + Mpix (CCD - Charged Coupled Device) sensor and excellent imaging capabilities. You may also consider the Sony CyberShot W50 or W70. Canon is also a good choice but most of them ship with CMOS sensors as compared to the CCD in Nikon and Sony. CCD outperforms CMOS any day. So in my openion, i would say 1)Nikon l1/l2 2)Sony W50 3)Sony W70 4)Nikon P3 (If you consider a higher budget) 5)Canon PowerShot series.
The choice is yours. I would recommend you go to an outlet and see each of these models , take a few sample shots. see which one matches upto your expectations the most and then go for the one you like. After all you dont want to end up with an expensive paper weight do you ?

Hope i helped you in some way.
