There are two reasons why dogs smile.

Firstly, it is a normal facial expression made by submissive or junior dogs to higher ranking dogs in a pack. It is sometimes referred to as a 'submissive grin' and is often lopsided with the head also turned slightly to one side.

The dogs might just be showing some respect and acknowledging the pack leader.

Secondly, some dogs have the ability to mimic a human smile. I think this ability is inherited as I have known several generations of dogs who all smiled by drawing their lips back equally on both sides of their mouth. It cannot be mistaken for a snarl by anyone who knows about dogs because the dogs whole body posture and attitude is so friendly.

I first noticed this years ago when a friend owned a 'smiler'. The woman always greeted her pup with a broad smile while putting her face quite close to the dog's face. Within a very short time the dog was 'smiling' back! That dog's father and grand-mother were smilers and so were two of her sons.

However when dogs pant they often turn up the corners of their mouth and look as if they are smiling. The Samoyed breed is also known as the Smiling Dog as it always seems to have a happy smile.

All those people who say dogs don't smile are so wrong! I have a greyhound who smiles all the time because she is so pleased to see people and she is a genuinely happy dog!. Also dogs only smile at people who they trust so you should feel privileged if dogs smile at you. Enjoy!

Dogs smile the same as we do, but they can also have a depressed look when they are down. Ever heard of " that hang dog expression" when someones looking miserable.

Dogs pant when they're either excited or hot. It's a rush of adrenilan that gets their blood pumping. So I guess indirectly they are smiling.
