LONDON (CNN) -- Bethlem Royal Hospital, the world's oldest mental institution, was founded in 1247 and celebrates its 750th anniversary this year.
The anniversary has been accompanied by a series of exhibitions, lectures and public events to highlight the centuries-old legacy of the hospital, known to most London residents as "Bedlam."
"A History of Bethlem," a major research project, was begun this year to examine the attitudes, treatments and cures in mental health over the centuries.

At one time, I thought it was funny. Can't say I find the humor in it so much now that I actually work in a mental institution...too close to home I guess! :)
