Other than a procedural protection justice seems to be nothing more than codified vengeance. The wounded families query "Has justice been done" really means "Is the prisoner dead yet?" How has Hammurabi's law changed in all these centuries?" We still seek an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. We just go though a procedure in seeking these body parts.

If I can say this loosely, retaliation (or vengeance) when standardized justifies those who carry it out. They are not guilty in any way. So after this, anyone who retaliates is unlawful. Which legalizes their condemnation.
There must be some way for society to see the civilized end to a conflict. If not-there can be war. I know of no war that was not the result of someone not yielding to some standard of conflict resolution that would be fair to all.

I'm not really sure what religion you are but I am a Christian and I don't believe in vengance but I do believe in justice!

For example I was drugged and raped by a 19 year old when I was 16 but I never seeked revenge. If I had the oportunity to I would actually want him to know that I forgive him for what he did to me! (trust me it definately took some time and counseling) My mom on the other hand wanted "justice to be served" (she's a paralegal) and I couldn't do anything about her reporting it to the cops! So now we are in the middle of a law suite and I believe I've brough my mom to terms. The only reason that we are taking him to court now is so that what he did to me he'll never do agian. It's not out of vengeance, we're not asking for money or for him to be in jail for the rest of his life but we are asking that he gets the help that he needs and that he understands what he did to me will affect me in some little way for the rest of my life! That is justice!

Justice is a natural result of cause and effect. Vengeance holds an additional connotation of taking personal satisfaction in the justice. This of course changes the justice. Rather than simply being the effect, vengeance creates a new cause that must have its own effect.

This nation was founded on the Ten Commandments, not Hammurabi's law. Justice is through being judged by piers, vengeance is done by vigilantes.

The Eye for an Eye was designed so we couldn't demand more than what was taken from us. It doesn't mean we HAVE to
get an eye for an eye.
But as you pointed out, that is the nature of man.
Justice means taking the circumstances into consideration, and sometimes one will get let off with a warning.
Vengeance knows no pity. If it was an accidental killing during
a fight. It doesn't matter.
The Book says a fathers sins will be accounted for unto the
third generation. Jesus said our Creator doesn't hold us
accountable for our fathers sins. Nevertheless, it is a
spiritual truth. Because Man will!

Great question! I believe vengeance is exacted by God alone. Justice is the system put in place by man to keep order in society (this is supported Biblically by God Himself) However, like anything we try to manage (organized religion, government, etc) there are always many flaws.

Blessed Be

Vengeance appears to me a manmade aggresive-ness (If that's even a word!) & justice appears to be what happens naturally to balance things out. If you withold your anger, & trust God will take care of things, than this represents your everpresent, undying faith in God. "Vengeance is mine saith the Lord." Have faith in that my friend.:o]

Both will be done by God. Vengance is mine saith the Lord. Judgement day will be the day of justice. Those who have sinned against our Lord God, will reap what they sow. Those who have been faithful will have justice.
