We really fancy making our own sloe gin but don't particularly trust ourselves to recognise sloes "in the wild".

If anyone knows where we could buy some in the UK we would be deeply grateful. Failing that, any tips on idiot-proof identification of them, please!

We live in Yorkshire, UK.

They are about the size of and look like black olives but with a blueish sheen. You find them on blackthorn bushes (sometimes like small trees) with long pointed thorns.

Look for them in old hedgerows -- go anywhere in the countryside.

and there are some pictures of them on the bush here http://www.gastronomydomine.com/2006/09/sloe-gin-finding-your-own-sloes.html

Maybe there is someone selling them, but there are so many available for free it seems unlikely. I'll bet if you asked around your friends or at work you'll come across someone whose made sloe gin or has a relative who has that will either tell you where to find sloes or will take you there.
