I too started to learn Spanish as a second language and I was terrified of making a mistake. I actually lived in Venezuela for 8 months and hardly spoke any, mostly listened (I had a translator too). But then I came back to the States and started to just use the words that I had learned from listening. Yes, it can be embarrasing, but the Spanish culture is very different from American and they are very nice about helping you to learn. They are unlikely to laugh at you. They may laugh with you, but never at you. My grammar is still all messed up, but with practice, it is easy to learn more and more. And they are usually happy to help you learn more, or how to say it correctly.
(Also watch it because a word in English can have many meanings and does not directly translate in Spanish the same. For example they have no differientiation between "do" and "make" - they use the same basic word. What I mean is they tell you what it means, use it in that way, and dont assume that it has other definitions, as it would in English)
Good luck!!!

Well, you should listen to any Spanish speaking person who is trying to learn to speak English... :)) Or, for that matter, to anyone who is trying to speak any language other than its native language! We all make mistakes at first and that will certainly boost your confidence!
Anyway, we all go through a time when we feel a little embarrassed when we start trying to speak a new language, but you should think of this as a part of the learning process only!
Do not be afraid of the initial pronunciation mistakes! Your Spanish speaking friends will certainly help in correcting your pronunciation and when they do, it will help you to remember the correct one!

OK, first of all Spanish is so simlier to french and french is a very romantic language. I can say most people think accents are sexy . If you speak spanish you will more than likley speak it with an accent and somewhere someone may say OHHHHHHHHH !!sounds so sexy and excotic ! So speak it sweetie, speak it. Have fun. I have learned five diffrent languages and have fun with it. Mostly with the hindi language..they say " where you learn the language " !!!! My favorate is french . I learn by asking questions to other races about thier language and take notes and learn from there.

I did French and Spanish at school - I could never open my mouth from embarassment if I ever met someone French or Spanish - and I failed my exams in both languages - twice!- and concluded that languages weren't for me.
Later on, I tried French again, went to France, struggled, but survived. Then I took Italian, and it came easily. Since then, I've studied many languages as a hobby, and working with asylum-seekers, I've had many opportunities to use what little I've learnt, and for it to be hugely appreciated. And I feel really pleased with myself when I remember that tongue-tied teenager burning up with embarassment.
Communication is all about goodwill. If people want to undestand each other, they can usually find a way, even with little or no common language; but if someone's got a stupid attitude, it's going to be a lot harder, but do you really want to bother with them anyway?
I've been in many funny situations trying to speak in other languages, but I can honestly say I can't remember a time when anyone laughed AT me in a mocking way.
Good luck, just try and the confidence will come with experience.

Wait! Before you ask him out are there any indicators that he could also be in the least interested? It seems like you realize what his reply will probably be. Second I commend you for being assertive in asking him out...extra girl will have to do this. I heard such a lot men find it irresistible while a lady takes lead. Last if he says no atleast you attempted and placed your self in the market. Don't be mad or disillusioned simply consider of it as he wasn't the proper one for you. Good Luck:)

You can do it. Get your boyfriend to help you with pronouncing things. Just keep practicing and with time the language will flow from you. I'm a southern guy. You should hear me. I really sound funny but my spanish friends help me. All you need is time.

its a double edged sword.....
more you dont speak it the more nervous you will be.
get out there and start vocalizing your Spanish talents.
even if you do stuff up a couple of times it doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things.
people are pretty impressed even if you simply have the respect to try and speak their language
plus the sooner you start the sooner you will get better and better
go for it!!!!!!

Lady if anyone laughs at you while you are trying to learn anything, they are little more than jackasses and should be treated as such.
Now go forth and make the mistakes everyone makes while trying to learn.
