It depends on what student visa you are on. The visa on your passport should be able to tell you if you are able to work and also the limitation.

If your student visa is less than 6 months, your visa should have "No work or recourse to public funds". You are not able to work at all during your stay. If your student visa is for more than 6 months, then you are allowed to work 20 hours a week during term time and work as a full time during school holidays.

In UK? I think you can, but on your student visa you are only supposed to work under 20 hours per week during school term, and you can work full time while you are on holiday. So it might be difficult if you mean you want to be self-employed. But if you mean freelance, then it shouldn't be a problem. Either case, you need to get National Insurance number, which can be a headache to get if you are not employed by someone.

You probably can, aslong as you have an NI number? I know somebody that is on a student visa and works in KFC in the UK.
I think you are able to get a temporary NI number.

I am not sure where you are able to get one from, but i think maybe the HMRC? - give them a phone call, if not them im sure they can point you in the right direction.
