In a good home theatre it is like being at the movies ... but:
- without having to go out in bad weather and travel long distances to the cinema (or possibly smoke filled sports bar) showing what you want to watch;
- without being annoyed by other people eating and talking;
- with the ability to pause when you want to, for instance for a biological or tea break;
- without the high cost of actually visiting the theatre (if you include admission, parking, baby sitting and maybe a dinner out this can easily be over a $100)
- with the ability to schedule what you want to watch and when, rather than working to a commercial schedule (and this includes changing your mind if the film turns out to be not what you are in the mood for); and,
- with the ability to adjust sound levels to your preference.
And -- best of all -- you always have the best seat in the house!
These benefits are available with any home theatre, but in my view they only fully apply if the image and sound approximate what you would see at the cinema.
I built ours around a front projector and 100" screen with good surround sound, and programme material available from an HDTV satellite DVR and DVD player. Since we set it up neither my wife nor I have had any inclination to go to a "real" cinema ... in fact we invite the neighbours over to our place!

HiYa Emma,
To me,the benefits I enjoy most are the fact that I can watch what I want .....when I want......No sticky floor,seats or dirty restrooms. I enjoy a more personal environment these days to enjoy video media. Let's see.....you can tailor the audio to just the way you like to hear it....more bass......less highs....etc....
It's a great place to go and realx.....escape reality for a little while....get some "me" time. It's also great to have friends/family over to watch a new movie. At present I'm watching more music dvd's .......concerts mostly.....I have the best seat available. That's a great benefit.....your own chair...the way you furnish the room means a lot. I enjoy mine. Just make sure Emma that you don't rely on just the speakers in the video monitor as that's not the best reproduction. Get a good digital surround A/V amp/receiver and at least a 5 channel speaker arrangement. Not sure Emma how much you know about the total system as to the audio and video devices needed so can't tell you exactly what you would need in your environment. Each room is different with the way sound from the speakers comes to your ears......some rooms need reflecting speakers.....some direct "straight at ya" speakers. I think that whatever you choose after doing your homework and asking questions.....you will be happy with it......so far I've had no bad experience with my system. Total Enjoyment!
Hope some of this has helped you....good luck Emma!
Mike

I actually find it not so good , because a person hardly gets more kick out of 5 channels.
U get used to it ,, it doesn't excite you anymore ,, stereo with high power amp would probably be better.
You could have an ambient generator , then use 2 speaker only. I find this less fatigueing.

None, if you are fine with a 21" tv with one built in speaker then you need nothing more. Its all about what you want.
