How do I hide or remove the icons from a Mac OS 10.2.8 desktop?

I want to be able to access the system from the Apple menu or another menu

I am looking to hide the icons only not the finder or the dock I want to see just the desktop wallpaper and dock and the menu bar nothing else

There is an application called Desktopple you can try. It's basically designed to hide cutter on your desktop.
