Sciatica nerve pain travels from your lower back and down the back of your leg. Mine travels more down the outer thigh than the back so this may vary. It is caused by pressure on the sciatica nerve in your lumbar spine. It is usually a burning or tingling pain and hurts more in your leg than your back. This is usually caused by inflammation and goes away in a few weeks...sometimes takes a few months. The only time you really have to worry is if it causes weakness in that leg or you can't control your bladder or bowels.

If you are having lots of trouble see your doctor. Physical therapy can help releive the pain. Surgery is only needed in extreme cases.

There are other nerves that can be causing the pain but the sciatica is the most common cause.

Possible entrapment or pathology of cutaneous nerves. If pain is over lateral (outside) aspect of thigh, this may be the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which provides sensation to the outer thigh area. Entrapment can be due to obesity, pregnancy or orthopedic problems, or to disease. If it is minor and transient, it may not be serious but if it is persistent, painful and interferes with sleep, exercise, etc., see a doctor.
