The term R.S.V.P. comes from the French expression "répondez s'il vous plaît",
meaning "please respond".
They want to know if you're going to their party so they can plan enough food and such.

It's actually asking you to respond YES or NO for attendance. No answer in my book is NO I will not attend that day. Often times they show up and I have to tell them, I do not have enough room as I have not heard from them and asked another couple in their place.
Hahaha, the answerer before me (remember send valuable presents!) I have to remember that one...lol that is funny!

What it is supposed to mean is ,"Please tell us beforehand how many people will be coming". What it really means is
"Remember! Send Valuable Presents"
