I would use both if you can, suet is great for smaller birds while the bigger birds like jays like the peanut butter. As for the best type of homemade feeder, anything that gives easy access to the seeds while keeping them off the ground. Also if squirrels are a problems expect some gnawing on the wood. Wire is best around suet and peanut butter. Remember once you start feeding the birds, keep it up all winter as they will be looking for that as a major food source and may die if you stop.

I use suet, I've have read that peanut butter by itself is not good, something about it actually suffocating birds. But it is safe if you mix seed in with it.

birdseed rolled into suet is better.
