I have seen some interesting stuff on this issue. Most martial artist hit thing regularly. however most don't realize that the human body is actually pretty cool and begins to defend itself against harm so it will fill in all the little holes in the bones with calcium deposits and actually harden the bones. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure what you mean.
Skilled martial artists can break things that are harder than their bone, but not things that are stronger. That is, they can break board, stone, block, brick, and other hard, but brittle, materials. But if they try to punch through an iron plate, they'll be wearing a cast on their wrist for the next 6-8 weeks.
The difference is "breakability" - which means brittle-ness. Strong, flexible materials can't be broken, even by the most gifted artists. No master is going to break an anvil, or a live willow tree. The lake cannot be broken, but blocks of ice are fair game.

I agree with Grendel and gamer here check out some demo movies that may be out in cyberspace for more info about it.

when doing breaking techniques, it's more about the focus and how the individual utilizes the part of the body and uses it properly.

because if it's improperly executed, the individual can wind up with a serious injury. So unless you study a traditional Martial Arts discipline that does breaking techniques (Tae Kwon Do or Tang Soo Do) I wouldn't suggest you try this on your own (it sounds like you may be wanting to try this yourself by the way you phrased your question)

highly unlikely you'll ever get attacked by a brick,a tile,a piece of pine made to look like hardwood(to make people look good when they break it)or any other hard inanimate object so why bother?
when the inanimate object is being wielded by a person then it's a bit different.but it's still the wielder you need to deal with not the inanimate object.breaking things for no reason is a waste of energy and doesn't prove anything.i suppose it does give the novices the ooh ahh factor.ooh ahh did you see that that 10th degree just broke that paddle pop stick with 2 punches.

try searching breaking demos under yahoo or google.
they show all kinds of things being broke. Like my instructor does demos breaking bricks and he breaks 10 3 inch bricks that are for garden hedges. THATS 30 INCHES! every time i see it done i wear casual clothes and stand in the audience and wait for someone to say something about him not being able to break it then make a bet with them and guess who always wins? ME of course.

Many people who go on breaking things like that end up with arthritis.
