Bassett hounds average litters are 6 - 8, but often are larger, as many as 15. Even with large litters, the mortality rate for Bassetts is no higher than breeds having smaller litters. Infection is the leading cause of death in newborn puppies and unfortunately, there's not much you can do to prevent this, other than keeping the surroundings as clean as possible.

They have on average 8 pups in a litter, however, it's common that they have a larger litter with 15 or more puppies. It varies in each subsequent litter. With proper care, shelter, and a good environment they should all make it through the first night.

Friendly Hello, The average litter is around 8 puppies. Mariano had 15 pups and to me that was unusually high. He lost only 1 puppy from that litter.

Blessings,

Kelly
